Update on the Campaign to Save Lorne Avenue School

As you are aware, on January 21, 2008 the London Capital Planning Advisory Committee (CPAC) voted down the TVDSB Administration’s recommendation to assign an Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) to Lorne Avenue School. However, we have been notified that the final decision about the assignment of an ARC to our school rests with the Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB). Therefore, your continued involvement in the campaign to save the school is vital.

Here is how you can help….

1) Attendance at Thames Valley District School Board Meetings when the future of our school or the decision of the London CPAC will be discussed.

Peggy Sattler, Chair of the TVDSB and Trustee for our Ward has agreed to let us know when these will be discussed by the Board. The next Board meeting is on February 12, 2008 so please be prepared to rally again for this date in the event that we are on the Board’s Agenda for that date. At the time of writing the February Agenda has not been posted.

In the meantime, please talk to your neighbours and solicit their attendance at future rallies.

2)  Lawn Signs

We are investigating the possibility of increasing the number of lawn signs in the neighbourhood. In the meantime:-

·              Please keep your lawn sign up. If you have taken it down please put it up again.

·               If you have a lawn sign and can no longer display it, please pass it on to a neighbour.

·              If you would like to have a lawn sign please call Susan Pedersen at 519-675-9723 or email her at pedersen@3web.com .The lawn signs cost 17 dollars each so if you can cover the cost of a sign or make a small contribution towards the cost of a sign that would be appreciated. However, if you cannot make a financial contribution please ask for a sign anyway as it is really important that we get the signs into the community.

·              Please talk to your neighbours about having a sign and give them Susan’s contact information.

Once we establish the demand for signs and associated costs, we can consider reordering.

2) Petition

·              If you have not already signed the petition please do so.

·              Please encourage your neighbours to sign the petition.

The petition can be signed on line at  www.savelorneavepublicschool.com

Lorne Ave Supporters,

In case you were unable to attend or stay until the end of Monday night's meeting of the CPAC, I am pleased to inform you that the recommendation for the proposed ARC involving Lorne Ave school has been rejected by the CPAC. The special circumstances of Lorne Ave School are recognized by the CPAC. However, the CPAC also recognizes the need of the TVDSB to review Lorne Ave in some capacity due to the amount of excess space in the building based on the Ministry's formula.

The final decision for the formation of an ARC rests with the full board of trustees who will meet in February. The CPAC is there to provide advice to the trustees based on community input. In the meantime, we have several community members in talks with the Ministry of Education who are trying to have the "space to pupil formula" changed.

Many thanks all who attended the Save Lorne Ave gathering and/or the meeting on Monday night. I'm sure our overwhelming support influenced the decision of the CPAC.

Jacalyn Grabowski

Chair, Lorne Ave School Council
